A coalition of right groups has urged United States President Joe Biden to extend Temporary Protected Status and Special Student Relief to Nigerians living in the country before the expiration of his administration.
The coalition, which included the Nigerian Centre, Nigerian American Lawyers Association, Amnesty International, and The One Campaign, made this known last Tuesday.
The group said the call was significant as Nigerians remained one of the people who contributed their skills to the growth of the American economy.
The Director of the Nigerian Centre, Gbenga Ogunjimi, made this known in a press release posted on the center’s website.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that leaders of the coalition met with representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, the US State Department, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and other federal agencies to advocate immigration relief for Nigerians in the country.
Ogunjimi said, “As the United States transitions to a new administration, we recommend prioritising this request as a policy recommendation for the incoming administration, particularly given its stated commitment to favouring merit-based immigration. This approach is especially relevant for individuals with skills in demand in the US economy.”
TPS is a programme that allows people from certain countries to stay in the United States if it’s unsafe for them to return home.
