A civil society group, Southern Solidarity Alliance, has expressed concern over what he described as the worsening condition of federal roads in southern Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency to address their poor conditions.

The group highlighted some critical roads in urgent need of reconstruction, including: Ipele-Isua, Benin-Auchi, Nsukka-Enugu, Sagamu-Ore, Ore-Benin, Benin-Asaba, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Onitsha-Enugu, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Umuahia-Akwa Ibom, Uyo-Calabar, Enugu-Nnokpanta, 9th Mile-Opi Junction-Obollo Afor-Makurdi, Amichi-Ezinifite-Amaruru-Ihitenansa-Orlu, Ibadan-Ifo-Ilesha Bye Pass, Ife-Ondo-Ore, Ughelli-Patani-Port Harcourt, East-West Road, and Ibadan-Iwo-Oshogbo Road, among others.

In a letter titled “President, please declare a state of emergency on the deplorable and decrepit federal roads in southern Nigeria: an SOS,” the group’s National Coordinator, Ndubuisi Okafor, called on the president to prioritise the reconstruction of the roads.

A copy of the letter made available to Saturday PUNCH, on Friday, read in part, “It is now critical to urge His Excellency to declare a state of emergency on the deteriorating federal roads across southern Nigeria, including the South-East, South-South, and South-West regions.

“These roads have been in a state of neglect and disrepair for years, and they have become a source of pain, suffering, and death for our people.”

The group further pointed out that some of the roads had sunk as much as nine feet into the soil, creating a hazardous environment for motorists.

“It is heartbreaking that many lives have been lost, and many more have been permanently disabled due to frequent accidents. Criminals are reportedly exploiting these collapsed roads, making them hotspots for kidnappings.

“These roads are vital links for regional connectivity and the functioning of our economy. We request that the Presidency give this matter the highest priority,” the group stated.
