The National Film and Video Censors Board in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, has launched a two-day media literacy and capacity-building programme aimed at empowering aspiring filmmakers in Nigerian universities.
Held at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos, the event attracted participants from different universities including University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State University, Trinity University and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology
Themed “Developing Film and Literacy Skills,” the programme featured notable guests, including actor Keppy Ekpenyong and the president of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan aka Mr. Latin, alongside the US Consulate’s Public Affairs Officer, Julie McKay.
In his opening remarks, NFVCB Executive Director Shaibu Husseini emphasised the need to bridge the gap between theory and practical filmmaking skills. He encouraged students to seize the opportunity to learn from industry experts.
McKay delivered a keynote address on “Fake News: The Need for Responsiveness and Responsibility,” praising Nigerian creativity and stressing the importance of media literacy in combating disinformation. The event culminated in over 300 students showcasing their newly acquired skills, with outstanding participants recognised by the NFVCB.
On his part, Amusan also highlighted the significance of formal education in gaining respect within the creative industry.
